Well before I had the honor to serve as President Barack Obama’s Secretary of Homeland Security and a member of his Cabinet, I was a student at Atlanta’s Morehouse College. Georgia is a special place, and it deserves accountable, principled leadership with the experience to carry our nation forward.

From my own time as President Obama’s Secretary of Homeland Security, it is my belief that the #1 obligation of a government is to protect the people it serves. Teresa was a very effective two-term Mayor of Columbus, leading that city to be ranked among the 25 Best Run Cities in America. And in Columbus, unlike most cities, the Mayor also serves as Public Safety Director and Head of Homeland Security for the region. As Mayor, Teresa held those positions for eight years — leading regional Homeland Security through mutual aid agreements, heading the Emergency Management Agency, and partnering with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency to provide coordinated responses to epidemics, pandemics, terrorist attacks, tornadoes, and more — including the regional response to a quarantined Ebola case in 2014, and to Hurricane Irma when Columbus received a state evacuation designation before being hit.

In a time of unprecedented crisis for our country, we see more than ever that who we elect matters. That’s why I believe we need more experienced leaders like Teresa Tomlinson in the U.S. Senate.
