Please join Prosperity Now on May 12 from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. EST for a webinar about potential harm that municipal fines and fees can have on working families; how COVID-19 is contributing to the problem; and what we can do post-crisis to better protect these households. Municipal fines and fees are debts arising from traffic violations, or other types of court-related costs that low-income communities of color are often least able to afford.

We will explore in more detail why these fines and fees are a problem; what different communities are doing at the state and local level to address this issue; and the policies that could help alleviate the burdens caused by this type of debt in the long run.

Speakers include:

  • Priya Sarathy Jones, National Campaign Director at the Fines & Fees Justice Center
  • Ellen Schumer, Executive Director and Co-Founder at Community Organizing and Family Issues (COFI), IL
  • Ryan Smith, Innovation Team Project Manager at the City of Durham
  • Anju Chopra, Senior Policy Manager at Prosperity Now

Please register today!

This webinar is supported by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, and is the second in a series that examines how low-income communities of color, particularly in the South, can reduce high levels of harmful debt and boost financial security.
