John,
Today marks ten years since 18-year-old Michael Brown was killed in an extreme and tragic act of police brutality.
Michael Brown’s death is a stark reminder that police brutality is gun violence — period.
Gun violence disproportionately affects Black Americans: Black people are three times more likely to be shot and killed by the police than white people. We can’t end gun violence unless intersectionality is at the center of our movement, not a side note.
That’s why we continue to fight to end armed supremacy, reduce the size and scope of policing, and advocate for community violence intervention programs. Guns do not make us safer. Especially when they are intertwined with racial bias, they only serve to fuel violence against innocent people.
We dream of a world where Michael Brown is alive.
We dream of a world free from gun violence. We dream of a world free from systemic oppression. We cannot know true liberation and safety until then.
In solidarity,
March For Our Lives
Today and every day we honor Michael Brown who was taken far too soon. Rest in Power.
