John,

Since Kamala Harris selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, Trump and his MAGA followers have desperately tried to smear him with ridiculous, false attacks.

Yesterday, JD Vance shot his shot by unearthing a “Swift Boat” style attack on Walz, questioning Walz’s more than two decades of military service.

The similarities between Vance’s “stolen valor” accusation and the “Swift Boat” campaign that hurt John Kerry in his 2004 campaign against George W. Bush are more than just a coincidence.

We’ll explain why in a moment, but if you support COURIER’s efforts to stop right-wing smear tactics in the lead-up to Election Day, can you chip in $20 now? [[link removed]]

Vance’s allegation of “stolen valor” stems from Walz’s retirement from the military in 2006. After serving for 24 years, Walz retired to run for Congress because the Department of Defense doesn’t allow military service members to hold public office.

Despite having zero evidence to support such a claim, Vance called Walz’s decades of service “stolen valor garbage,” implying that Walz only retired to avoid going to the Iraq war.

The attacks are eerily similar to the 2004 Swift Boat attacks on John Kerry. That’s by design. Why? Chris LaCivita is now a senior adviser to the Trump campaign and has been extremely influential for Trump’s 2024 run.

Predictably, Fox News ran with the attacks last night. They even used the tried and true “Swift Boat” method of bringing on a member of Walz’s former battalion on Jesse Watters’s prime-time show to attack Walz and echo Vance:

It’s clear, John: the Trump-Vance campaign will do and say anything to win. That includes using Fox News and the far-right media to spread disgraceful lies and smears about Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.

The bad news is that, in the case of the last attempt to “Swift Boat” a candidate, sometimes this kind of slash and burn campaign works.

But the difference this time is that COURIER is here to fight back by spreading the truth about Harris, Walz, their accomplishments, and their policy proposals to the voters who need to hear it most. As the most consequential election of our lifetimes approaches, we believe it is our democratic duty to be prepared to provide voters with the facts they need to make a decision at the polls.
