Nearly 20,000 NARAL supporters have spoken out in support of lifting the medically unnecessary restrictions on medication abortion. But John, your name isn't on the list.
Lifting these federal restrictions on medication abortion is one of the best ways we can expand access to care during this scary and difficult time. Our voices have never been more important — and we need to get loud now. Will you speak up and add your name today?
There are plenty of reasons why the FDA needs to lift these restrictions now. Just take a look:
- Medication abortion is safe and effective. For nearly two decades, mountains of evidence has shown that medication abortion is both incredibly safe and effective.1,2
- Experts agree that these restrictions on medication abortion are medically unnecessary. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists endorses lifting the restrictions and argues that they obstruct providers’ abilities to deliver the highest quality of patient care.3
- Telemedicine (also known as telehealth) is more important than ever. Allowing mifepristone to be dispensed at pharmacies and through the mail would prevent people from being forced to travel far from their homes to access abortion care and unnecessarily risk exposure to the coronavirus.4
- Science should always be used to determine public health policy — not ideology. Anti-choice politicians have exploited the pandemic to advance a political agenda. 13 states and counting have attempted to ban abortion since March, and access to time-sensitive, essential care is more restricted than ever in some states.5
- Lifting medication abortion restrictions will help improve access in the most underserved communities. People with low incomes, people of color, and people living in rural communities already have a more difficult time accessing abortion care than others. Lifting medically unnecessary federal restrictions would expand reproductive freedom for these marginalized populations.
