John,
ALL gun violence is a threat to the community, including police violence.
On July 6th, 36-year-old Sonya Massey was executed in her home for the crime of calling the police while Black.
Sonya called local police to report a possible home intruder. Upon arrival, officers treated her like a threat. After asking her to remove a pot of boiling water, the conversation quickly escalated. Her murderer pointed his gun at her, screaming he would kill her if she didn’t drop the pot. Sonya began to get on her knees and put her hands up, and he still shot her in the FACE. The officers waited two full minutes to provide medical care, but even when she was still gasping for air, decided there was nothing they could do to save her.
Black people disproportionately face police violence. Gun violence is more than mass shootings; it includes police violence as well.
No one is safe when they are targeted for their race, gender, or sexuality. We deserve better than a culture of fear created by the very people charged to “protect and serve.”
Sonya deserved better. Black women deserve safety and protection. This was a racist murder. Don’t look away. Say her name. Sonya Massey.
Imagine a world where police had to actually obey the law and were swiftly held accountable for committing violent acts. Imagine a world where we had more investment in violence intervention programs and de-escalation training. That’s the world we’re fighting for.
Together we have the power to create a future where no one has to lose their life to gun violence.
