Hi John --
It's been a whirlwind.
The conversation is all about the evolving presidential race. But underneath it all is something astonishing. 51% of the country <[link removed]> now identify as independent. 51%.
Many factors are driving this surge of political independence. At the most fundamental level it’s a protest. A protest against the self-serving culture of party politics. A protest against political elites who call all the shots, like the Democratic Party leaders who canceled the 2024 presidential primary in favor of a coronation (in case you missed it, here is our conversation with Congressman Dean Phillips <[link removed]> about the coronation from January 2024). A protest against election denialism. A protest against the vicious way both political parties turn healthy disagreement into division and hatred and pit Americans against each other in a never ending quest to get one more vote than the other team.
The 51% is not a bloc. We don’t all think alike. We vote in different ways, if we vote at all. We’re not a party --but we are a mindset. And while the media is 100% focused on every aspect of this year’s presidential contest, independents are consistently saying “We Want Something Better!” Don’t take my word for it - read what Indiana independent voter Jay Deshmukh has to say to WFYI in Indianapolis. <[link removed]>
This November, open primaries will be on the ballot in 6 states across the country and hopefully Washington DC. Another 12 states are getting ready for 2025 and 2026. We’re in court in Tennessee and exploring new legal tactics for next year. These are independent efforts, not partisan efforts. These are campaigns, initiatives, lawsuits, legislation designed to amplify: "We Want Something Better!"
We are working really hard this summer. Every campaign is going to be tough. What we do in the dog days of August could make a difference between victory and defeat on the ballot this November. We are going for broke…and we need your help!
We have 9 days left in our summer fundraising campaign. We just crossed $110,000 towards our goal of raising $200,000 and ensuring we secure our $200,000 in matching gifts.
If you have already given, please give again or ask a friend to give. If you haven’t given, please do so today. We don’t want to leave a single dollar on the table of the generous $200,000 matching gift! Make an investment in creating something better! <[link removed]>
<[link removed]>DONATE <[link removed]>Thank you so much for supporting our work and helping us ramp up our efforts to pass every open primary campaign in 2024.
In solidarity,
John Opdycke & the Open Primaries Team
