John,
12 years ago today, a gunman bought a ticket for The Dark Knight Rises at the Century 16 movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. After the movie started, he left through an emergency exit, propped the door open, and came back in with military-grade gear covering his legs, neck, and head. He fired 76 shots, killed 12 people, and injured 70 more.
Authorities found he spent $15,000 on legal purchases of bullets, guns, tear gas grenades, and ballistic gear.
Our communities shouldn’t keep suffering because our country makes military-grade weapons readily available for the instant gratification of anyone, regardless of their background. No one should watch their family die because they wanted to see a movie. A movie.
As the Aurora community worked to reconcile the terror and violence, gun and ammunition sales spiked. The NRA has always fed on the paranoia from families afraid they’re next, or gun enthusiasts that hoard in the fear they will lose access to deadly weapons.
At the time, this was one of the worst mass shootings in the country’s history. Today, the tragedy remains in the public’s hearts and minds, forever altering the Aurora community and beyond.
Random acts of violence should not be commonplace. Every American has the right to freedom from violence. If we want a safer country like our allies with common sense gun laws , then we must continue to make gun safety legislation a priority.
The best way to honor the 12 lives lost and countless lives traumatized in the Aurora community, is to fight for change. We will not stop advocating for a country free from gun violence and acts of terror. Every community, family, and person deserves a government that does right by them.
To the future,
March For Our Lives HQ
