Here’s what should happen:
Donald Trump should be able to read the damn room and see now is the time to lower the political temperature and call for comprehensive gun safety reform after narrowly escaping a shooting with barely a scratch. Over the last few days, he’s talked about “unity” and we hope this means he’s had a true change of heart.
But given Trump’s long history of hateful and violent rhetoric, we’re not holding our breath.
Speaking directly to his far-right supporters, we can bet that Trump is going to exactly what he does best: spew lies, hate, and divisiveness that will foment political violence — NOT "unity."
Even if he changes his tune in his speech, watch what Trump does, not just what he says.
His words tonight are just that: words. And he's said an AWFUL lot of dangerous things lately.
From calling his opponents vermin, inciting the January 6th insurrection, mocking political violence that targets other elected officials, and even expressing support for his former vice president to be hanged — since Trump roared onto the political scene almost ten years ago, he has trafficked in division, hate, and violence.
Trump cannot claim peace and unity only when it serves him. Unless he backs that up with actions towards a gun violence-free future, everything he says is meaningless.
