First, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp revealed an astonishing lack of knowledge about the coronavirus when he announced on April 2, 2020 that he had only just learned that asymptomatic people could transfer the virus – information that was common knowledge by that point.

Now, Gov. Kemp has announced his plan to open certain businesses on Friday, including nail salons, bowling alleys, and gyms.

Gov. Kemp’s hasty decision concerns me for many reasons. For one, there is no substantiated evidence that Georgia’s battle with coronavirus is anywhere near over. He has also selected businesses where people typically have very close personal contact which could facilitate the spread of the virus. And, reopening too soon could cause even more harm and ultimately extend the timeline of the crisis.

It seems Gov. Kemp is risking the health – and lives – of Georgians instead of relying on science and health experts to guide his decisions.

We’re all eager for life to return to “normal,” but that does not mean our government should make risky decisions that could jeopardize the health of Georgians and prolong the economic fallout.
