John,

These are extraordinary times. Georgia is in the news again and unfortunately, not for a good reason. Gov. Brian Kemp has announced that he plans to reopen nail salons, massage therapists, bowling alleys and gyms this Friday, contrary to the advice of top epidemiologists. He will then follow that maddening decision by reopening restaurants and movie theaters on Monday. John, let me tell you my thoughts on this in three words: This. Is. Ludicrous!

DONATE TO FIGHT BACK >>

This is an extremely dangerous move. It is especially concerning because Gov. Kemp has admitted in the past that he has not kept himself educated on the basic facts of COVID-19 -- for example, he confessed a few short weeks ago that he had only just become aware that people without symptoms can spread the disease. And this isn’t the first time Gov. Kemp has pulled a move like this. Just two weeks ago he reopened our state's beaches despite the strong objections of local towns who showed true leadership by making the very difficult decision to lose tourism revenue and shut them down.

John -- I want our state reopened as much as anyone else. I miss eating at my favorite restaurants and seeing all of you at my events. We have a primary coming up on June 9th, and I’m eager to chat with voters in-person and share everything we’ve accomplished. But there is no scientific evidence that shows Georgia is ready for this drastic decision, and by moving too fast we could very easily move ourselves backwards and have to close everything down again. Opening too soon could expose us to COVID-19 and hasten its spread -- especially because we rank in the bottom 10 states for tests per capita. This is a matter of health and safety for Georgians!

The sad truth is that this move is about profits over people and about Gov. Kemp pleasing his real boss, President Donald Trump (not Georgia voters).

Clearly, John, leadership on this issue isn’t going to come from the governor’s mansion. It’s going to have to come from us. Will you spread the word about this reckless decision by forwarding this email to friends, or pitching in a small contribution to help us get the message out? We are all in this together, and I promise I won’t stop fighting for you and our shared safety. It’s time to put people over profits! Won’t you join me in this fight?

In solidarity,
Hank
