I believe that yesterday, Saturday July 13 2024, was a very sad day for the United States.
This was an attempt to assassinate [ [link removed] ] a president. We don’t yet know more. We know nothing less.
Every American president is not just a person, but a symbol for our nation itself. We have seen horrific attacks on Members of Congress and the courts. But this is a dramatic escalation. It is a categorically different class of violence.
I reject it.
I recently ran for office, and learned so much I hope to share soon. Here’s one thing I learned:
Republicans are not the bad guys. They’re not evil. They’re just not. Stop calling them extreme MAGA Republicans. They’re not extreme; they’re just populists. Stop calling Bernie Sanders a communist or an extremist. He’s just a Scandinavian-style democratic socialist - and populist, too. Democracy will survive Trump. Capitalism would survive Bernie. America endures. But we are not in our finest hour.
Rather than decrying populism and maligning populists, all of us - especially those of us who, like me, are elite educated white collar professionals - must look in the mirror and ask ourselves what we are doing to help make a country that works damn well for us work for all Americans.
Most important, we must love.
And if we do all this, I have no doubt, we will repair this breach.
“Those from among you will rebuild the ancient ruins; You will raise up the age-old foundations; And you will be called the repairer of the breach, The restorer of the streets in which to dwell.” -Isaiah 58:12
Reach out today to someone whom you have wronged. Forgive those who have wronged you.
Come together. Make peace. Seek out difficult political conversations. Avoid blame.
And vote.
