John,
On July 4, 2022 in Highland Park, soon after the community’s Fourth of July parade started, a gunman shot into the crowd from a nearby rooftop.
Seven people died and more than 45 were seriously injured.
This mass shooting is a stark reminder that we will never truly be safe until we have comprehensive gun safety legislation.
Simply existing in the public puts you at risk. Whether you’re going to class, the mall, a movie, or even a Fourth of July parade, we’re all at risk.
This isn’t to fearmonger or to make you anxious — this is being real about the state of our country. This is what happens when the gun lobby, the NRA, and the leaders they have in their pockets prioritize guns over lives.
There was no one ‘cause’ of the shooting in Highland Park. We saw an assault rifle manufacturer irresponsibly marketing the military-style firearm to teenagers and young adults, like the 21-year-old shooter. We also saw that despite sending troubling signals to police, the young gunman was still able to obtain a firearm license. When he further showed he was a danger to himself and others, neither his family nor law enforcement reported him to reevaluate if he could safely have his firearm. This is why we need to fight gun violence from all possible angles.
Since the shooting, March For Our Lives and our partners won an assault weapons ban in Illinois, and then successfully defended [[link removed]] against the gun lobby's cowardly legal challenge. Just this week, we won again when the Supreme Court declined to hear a challenge to it. We are pleased that this work protected that ban, but know that there is still so much to be done.
To honor those we’ve lost we will continue fighting for a world free of gun violence.
We can’t lose hope. We can build a world where no other individual, family, or community will have to experience gun violence.
In solidarity,
March For Our Lives
Today and every day we honor the lives lost in Highland Park on July 4, 2022.
