We As Democrats Believe:

“Yesterday I laid out what’s required for North Carolina’s path to gradual re-opening, and it’s good the White House has shared similar guidance, but we still need the federal government to help with testing and personal protective equipment.”

-- Governor Roy Cooper

USDA Authorizes New Food Benefits To SNAP Beneficiaries in North Carolina

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue has announced that North Carolina and Massachusetts have been approved to operate Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT), a new program authorized by the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA), which provides assistance to families of children eligible for free or reduced-price meals dealing with school closures. For the 2019-2020 school year, North Carolina had approximately 903,000 children eligible for free-and reduced-priced lunch, or about 59% of children in participating schools. With schools closed some children have been deprived of a reliable source of nutritious daily meals.

North Carolina will be able to operate Pandemic EBT, a supplemental food purchasing benefit, to current SNAP participants and as a new EBT benefit to other eligible households. This is to offset the cost of meals that would have otherwise been consumed at school.

NCDP Seeks Volunteers To Register Voters

Angry about how Trump is mis-handling the public health crisis? Frustrated by the refusal of the State Legislature to take common sense steps to improve the lives of North Carolinians?  The North Carolina Democratic Party is looking for volunteers looking to make change. Are you ready for action.

Right now the NCDP is hitting the phones to urge potential voters to register to vote online. Please sign up here to attend a brief orientation session on Zoom to go over the script. If none of the orientation session times work for you, please reach out to Savannah Fritz (717-360-9879; [email protected]) and she can get you set up to make calls from the comfort and safety of your home. Thank you and please reach out if you have questions about phone banking or ideas for how we can safely register new voters during this crisis.

Another Week, Another Burr Scandal

(From NCDP) According to a new report from ProPublica, Senator Richard Burr sold his Washington, D.C. townhouse in a private transaction to longtime lobbyist John Green for a price estimated to be tens of thousands of dollars above its market value. Green is a longtime donor to Burr's political campaigns and lobbied on behalf of multiple clients with business before Burr’s committees. Burr reportedly used the proceeds from the sale to buy a beach house.

Senator Burr continues to come under fire for numerous scandals demonstrating that he is looking out for himself and not North Carolinians. Burr told donors -- not the public -- about the extent of the coronavirus threat and sold stock ahead of a market sell-off after receiving intelligence briefings.

Join the COVID-19 Precinct Initiative

COVID-19 has us sheltering at home, out of touch (literally), and feeling isolated. NHCDP precincts are preparing to reach out to Democrats by phone to ask how they are doing. We want Democrats to know that NHCDP is fully engaged and cares about their welfare.  We also want to be sure they are looking ahead to the November election and make them aware that voting by absentee ballot may be their safest option. We also have information to share about voter registration and registration changes, participating in the 2020 Census, and how to be informed about Dem Party and candidate events.

DOING (Democrats Organizing In Neighborhood Groups) is refocusing their activities to assist us in helping all precincts to set up and accomplish this virtual phone bank. Does your precinct need help with recruiting volunteers, training, or Vote Builder? Let Susanne Werner know and DOING will help you make it happen.

Questions? Call Susanne Werner, [email protected].
