Dear john,

Later today the Prime Minister will announce a decision as to whether NZ will leave level 4 lock-down for level 3. National will comment on that decision and its implications later tonight.

I know many of you are increasingly thinking about the economic dimensions of this crisis and how NZ might emerge from recession. What will the world economy look like for the next two years? How will this affect demand for Kiwi products and services? What will unemployment look like with the tourism and hospitality sectors utterly transformed? Is a boost to domestic tourism possible?  What kind of infrastructure investment might make sense to stimulate the economy? Should tax cuts stay on the table?

These are questions National will address in detail over the coming weeks.  Together with my caucus colleagues I am reading widely on these subjects and seeking out perspectives and expertise from around the country and the world.  I’d welcome any articles you’ve read or thoughts you think are particularly relevant.

In this spirit of seeking out informed opinion I am tonight at 7:30pm hosting a Facebook Live Q&A with former Minister of Finance (and just about everything else) the Honourable Steven Joyce. If there’s a question you’d like me to ask him let me know either by reply, by commenting on my Facebook page or on the livestream. I hope you’ll join us online for the session.

Kind regards,

Nicola
