In case you missed it, The New York Times’ editorial board penned an op-ed on Friday calling for President Biden to step down following his performance in Thursday’s debate:
The Times’ decision is controversial because, as Barack Obama tweeted in the hours following the debate, “bad debates happen. Trust me, I know.”
By pointing out his own poor debate performance in 2012, Obama cautioned against simply ignoring three and a half years' worth of Biden administration success because of a bad 90-minute debate performance.
But rushing to judgment is precisely what the Times did by calling on Biden to drop out. And the decision is even more puzzling when you consider what the same editorial board wrote in May when Donald Trump was convicted of 34 felonies:
“The jurors have delivered their verdict, as the voters will in November. If the Republic is to survive, all of us – including Mr. Trump – should abide by both, regardless of the outcome.”
Trump’s crimes, of course, are far more severe than a single poor debate performance. In his New York trial, Trump was convicted of a hush-money scheme designed to influence the outcome of the 2016 election. It’s not like Trump’s disregard for the rule of law, and democracy is an isolated incident – this is the same guy who lied about the 2020 election being stolen and used that lie to justify an attempted coup of our government on January 6th.
John, this isn’t the first time this year the New York Times has been questioned for bias against President Biden.
In April, Politico reported a “feud” between the Biden Campaign and the Times, with the campaign frustrated that the Times was:
“falling short in a make-or-break moment for American democracy, stubbornly refusing to adjust its coverage as it strives for the appearance of impartial neutrality, often blurring the asymmetries between former President Donald Trump and Biden when it comes to their perceived flaws and vastly different commitments to democratic principles.” - Politico, April 24th, 2024.
Sound familiar? 🤔
And remember this hero shot that ran on the front page of the Times when Trump entered his not-guilty plea to charges that he endangered national security by flagrantly mishandling classified documents?
In fact, the Times' bias has been so alarming that Salon published a piece titled “There is something wrong at the New York Times,” in which they discussed the seemingly favorable coverage Donald Trump was getting in comparison to the Biden campaign:
So here’s the problem: the New York Times is trusted, widely read, and even called a “paper of record,” meaning that it is recognized that its publications have a profound impact on our democracy.
So it matters when the Times calls for Biden to step down because of his performance on the debate stage. And when they sweep Trump’s crimes under the rug and put it on the voters to decide whether a convicted felon should be our next president, that matters, too.
So here’s our promise. We will never draw a false equivalency between Donald Trump and Joe Biden at COURIER. We will also never be afraid to call out the Times or any other legacy media for blatant hypocrisy in their reporting.
And we’re offering a meaningful alternative by making trustworthy journalism freely available in eleven battleground states because we want voters to know the truth in what could be the most critical election of our lifetime.
