This Tuesday U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy declared gun violence in America a public health crisis. This is HUGE.
Dr. Murthy in his advisory also called for an increase in funding for firearm violence prevention research; advises health workers to discuss firearm storage with patients during routine medical visits; and recommends safe storage laws, universal background checks, “red flag” laws and an assault weapons ban, among other measures.
All things we’ve been fighting for since the very beginning of our movement.
This cannot be overstated, John. This is a HUGE step forward. Our push for more research and tighter laws is paying off, and we're starting to win BIG.

We commend Dr. Murthy for standing up against the gun lobby and the NRA.
The NRA has done everything in its power to block the type of data and research Dr. Murthy has shared from coming out.
They even lobbied against Dr. Murthy’s appointment as Surgeon General by President Obama in 2014.
This is what happens when we elect leaders who aren’t in the pocket of the NRA. This is the progress we can make. We wouldn’t have Dr. Murthy as Surgeon General without Obama in office.
But that was only the first step. This win is due to the decades of activist pressure on the federal government to address gun violence in a meaningful way.
We hope that this change in classification will come with aggressive federal legislation to address just how deadly an epidemic gun violence truly is.
