Dear John, Good news: Our decades-old domestic violence laws remain intact. Just this morning, in United States v. Rahimi, the Supreme Court upheld the federal law that prohibits people subject to domestic violence restraining orders from possessing guns. Even most of the ultra-conservative justices agree that the Second Amendment allows for commonsense gun laws. The Court’s decision in this case had the potential to threaten scores of other lifesaving gun laws. Women in the US are 21 times more likely to die from a gun than women in other high-income countries—and if the Court had struck down this law, this deadly gap would surely have widened. GIFFORDS Law Center’s executive director, Emma Brown, was on MSNBC in the moments following the decision:

This decision was a long time coming. Gabby Giffords, Giffords Law Center,
and many gun safety advocates have spent the last year urging the Supreme
Court to make the smart and safe decision. My team at Giffords Law Center
filed an [ [link removed] ]amicus brief urging the court to protect survivors, and we
[ [link removed] ]hosted a rally on the steps of the Supreme Court while oral arguments
in the case were heard.

Today, the justices prioritized the safety of survivors of domestic
abuse—but this ruling simply upholds the status quo. Our attorneys
continue to fight against the gun lobby in courts across the country, and
we’re grateful to have you standing by our side.

With courage,
Esther
