We hope that today you’re able to spend time with your community and remember those who came before us and their sacrifices in the pursuit of freedom for Black Americans.
June 19, 1865 , marks the end of slavery in America — it was the day that the last formerly enslaved people in Texas found out they were free.
Today, we celebrate and honor just how much progress we’ve made since that day and the beauty of Black culture.
But even as we honor the history that has come before us, our eyes are on the future.
We know that addressing gun violence is critical to our collective liberation. It’s central to the fight against white supremacy. We’ve seen how much deadlier violence, hate, oppression, and racism can become when they are intertwined with guns.
More people are killed by extremists using firearms [[link removed]] than any other weapon, and hate crimes have continued to increase. Of the hate crimes reported between 2020 and 2022, over half [[link removed]] targeted Black people, and hate crimes targeting Black children and teenagers [[link removed]] rose 12% in 2021 and nearly 15% in 2022. Tackling gun violence means dismantling and confronting white supremacy.
And, at March For Our Lives, not only are we working to pass “traditional” gun safety legislation like universal background checks, but we also uplift community-based violence intervention programs to help stop gun violence at the root cause and work to address police violence that disproportionately affects Black communities.
Today – and every day – must be devoted to advancing liberation, dismantling racial oppression, and building a world where all can experience freedom and safety.
