John, we need all hands on deck. Congress has a narrow window to reverse last week’s deadly Supreme Court decision to legalize bump stocks — the gun accessory that enabled the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. Democrats are introducing the Senate Bill 1909, Banning Unlawful Machinegun Parts Act by vote under unanimous consent — THIS AFTERNOON. This vote will only work to reverse the SCOTUS decision if NO lawmaker objects. We need every single Senator on our side. Bump stocks are deadly gun accessories and there’s no reason they should be legal and widely available. It’s no exaggeration to say that they’re weapons of war. Previous to the Supreme Court’s ruling, they were banned due to their role in the tragic Las Vegas mass shooting in 2017 — which remains the deadliest mass shooting in American history. The Las Vegas shooter used bump stocks to fire over 1,000 rounds in about ten minutes killing 60 people and injuring nearly 500 at the Route 91 Harvest music festival. This shooting was so devastating that even the NRA — yes, the NRA — agreed that bump stocks should be regulated. Yet the gun lobby’s memory is short. Last week, the Supreme Court’s conservative supermajority ignored the safety of all Americans by legalizing bump stocks once again. Young people will die if this ruling stands. The Supreme Court has effectively reversed gun safety progress and given mass shooters the easy ability to turn any event or public space into a war zone and mass grave.
