Dear Ward 8 Residents:

Today, the Council held an Additional Legislative Meeting to discuss the Local Budget Act for Fiscal Years 2024 and 2025. Councilmember Trayon White, Sr. frequently reminds us that a budget is a moral document, reflecting our priorities through resource allocation. This year’s budget showcased a mix of achievements and setbacks, notably in the public safety and housing sectors.Key points include:
  • A 13% increase in funding for the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), adding 100 new full-time positions.
  • Significant cuts to public safety and prevention programs: $94 million from the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), a 24% reduction ($25 million) for the Office of Victim Services and Justice Grants, and a 10% cut for the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (ONSE).
  • A three-year, $515 million funding plan for Monumental Sports, primarily for Capital One Arena.
Housing and community development faced challenges as well:
  • Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) received $26.7 million for FY25, far less than the $70 million requested.
  • The Housing Production Trust Fund received $60 million, with the Council adding $21 million to mitigate the shortfall.
  • Rapid rehousing programs saw significant cuts, impacting subsidies for 2000 families, with only an additional $2 million proposed.
Councilmember White, Sr. continues to advocate for Ward 8, striving to align the budget with community priorities.

Regards,

Trayon White, Sr.
Councilmember, Ward 8

Temporary Lane Closures for DC PLUG Feeder 15166

(WASHINGTON, DC) —The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) advises stakeholders to expect delays due to upcoming lane closures to install manholes and conduits for the DC Power Line Undergrounding (DC PLUG) initiative. Motorists can expect southbound lane closures in the 2900 to 3000 blocks of Martin Luther King Jr Avenue SE between Malcolm X Avenue SE and Labaum Street SE from May 28 – June 21, 2024. Northbound and southbound lane closures in the 2800 to 2900 blocks of 2nd Street SE between Newcomb Street SW and Malcolm X Avenue SE will take place from May 28 – June 28, 2024, weather permitting.

Legislative Updates

The legislative team worked to push an emergency bill dubbed the “Anacostia Business Improvement District Emergency Amendment Act of 2024”. This bill expands the Anacostia BID to Barry Farm and the 11th Street Bridge Park. For current safety, beautification, and workforce development efforts that connect the communities within the BID, the two areas are critical for the consistency and attention needed to be sustained. The action has been postponed to the next legislative meeting on June 26th, 2024. The expansion of the BID zone will help Ward 8 be a safer, more economically viable area for all residents.  Other actions introduced this week are the Oxon Run Park Day Recognition, the Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Recognition resolution, and the Caribbean Heritage Month recognition.

The Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebrates the achievements, contributions, and diversity of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities and, declares May 2024 as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the District of Columbia.

The Caribbean Heritage Month Recognition Ceremonial Resolution of 2024 Celebrates the achievements, contributions, and diversity of Caribbean communities and declares June 2024 as Caribbean Heritage Month in the District of Columbia.
