🔗 #BreakTheLink this general election

Everyone deserves an equal say in our democracy John, not just those with deep pockets. But for too long, corporate lobbyists for big finance have used their power to rig the system and put their profits ahead of public interest.

This general election, demand all party leaders break the link with big finance and build a future parliament that works for everyone - not just the City of London.

Positive Money was founded after reckless big banks crashed our economy in the financial crisis of 2008. Since then, bankers have continued to bend politicians to their will and spun regulations in their favour. It’s easy to win a game when you write the rules John, and big finance is playing all of us.

All together, big finance (banks, insurance companies, investment and accountancy firms, and individuals tied to the financial sector) spent £2.3 million on MPs between January 2020 and December 2021 alone. 1 in 5 peers in the House of Lords have a paid position in the financial sector and every Chancellor of the last 40 years has taken a job in finance after leaving office. [1] And with the big four accountancy firms donating to multiple parties, it’s clear this isn’t a matter of ideology, it’s about buying influence. [2]

We need a finance industry that serves communities – like protecting bank branches on our local high streets and helping small businesses access the loans they need – not one that gambles, funds, and profits from wreaking destruction on people and planet; be that bankrolling genocide, or fuelling the climate crisis. [3]

To stop the voice of the City of London from shouting over everyone else, we must

  • ban second jobs for MPs,

  • cap political party donations, and

  • slow the revolving door.

By committing to all three, party leaders could stop big finance from buying seats at the table and kick them out of politics to restore the most important voice in parliament: ours.
