Last week, the State House welcomed former Capitol police officer Harry Dunn and former Sergeant Aquilino Gonell to recognize and thank them for their service in defending our democracy on January 6, 2021.
During this solemn occasion to honor these heroes, we saw despicable behavior from some of the GOP House members. These brave officers were disrespected by several Republican lawmakers who walked off the House floor, turned their backs, and even booed. This behavior is shameful, abhorrent, and shallow. The lack of respect, patriotism, and common decency epitomizes the poor behavior that so many in the MAGA movement have adopted.
John, control of the State House will be decided on the margins this November. The stakes of this year’s election — our rights, our democracy, even common decency — couldn’t be higher. We cannot let the State House fall into the hands of a party that cannot even come together to honor the brave officers who defended our democracy during a very dark day in our nation’s history.
