# [#]It’s no secret our schools are in trouble, every community is experiencing teacher shortages and school closures. Today, The Observer brought to light that Patrick’s opponent’s Dave Upthegrove supports divesting timber sales from funding public education – that’s $200 million dollars–with no real plan to replace it.
Last legislative session couldn't even find the budget for free school lunches for kids, let alone a budget shortfall like this.
😱😱😱
Conserving more public lands is incredibly important. At the same time, we can’t overlook the immediate financial impacts on communities that rely heavily on these funds for basic educational infrastructure – including rural communities and Tribal Nations, like Patrick’s in Neah Bay.
We need to take action now to ensure that our next Public Lands Commissioner has the experience to lead our state by proposing real plans that consider the impacts on marginalized communities and actually addresses them, rather than playing politics with state resources.

The Observer said it best: the swanky condos of Upthegrove’s home in King County stand in sharp contrast to life in Neah Bay on the far reaches of the Olympic Peninsula.
There, the realities of rural and Tribal life manifest daily, and decisions made in distant offices can have immediate and profound effects on rural communities like ours.
Transitioning to even more sustainable practices is necessary but we must not leave our most vulnerable communities behind.
True environmentalism puts working people and communities first, asking not just how we advance our climate goals, but how we ensure those who are most impacted remain whole throughout the process.

Your input is vital as we strive to develop policies that truly reflect the needs and values of all Washingtonians.
It’s vital that our transition to sustainable practices strengthens rather than undermines our communities.
