John,

A troubling percentage of everyday Americans are living paycheck-to-paycheck, struggling against rising costs and greedy inflation. While our communities suffer, our government continues to sign off on massive checks to corporate military contractors.

Since 2017, leaders of each military branch, the Missile Defense Agency, 11 combatant commands, and the National Nuclear Security Administration have been allowed to go beyond the agreed-upon budget proposals and create a list of additional programs and activities they want funded. It’s called the “Unfunded Priorities List” (UPL).

For the fiscal year of 2025, UPL requests are over $25 billion — that’s in addition to the $895 billion budget agreed upon by the Biden administration, one-third of which will go to defense contractors.

We must invest in our communities — in housing, in climate protections,in ending hunger, in education, and in our economy — before flooding billions more to military contractors. Sign if you agree >> [[link removed]]

Military contractors funded by our government have spent that money — $138 million — on lobbying Congress to further their interests in 2023 alone. There’s an utter lack of financial regulation and oversight here, and since the 1990s, our Department of Defense has been on the Government Accountability Office’s list of high-risk areas “needing urgent attention and fundamental transformation to ensure that they function in the most economical, efficient, and effective manners possible.”

Let us remind you — the Department of Defense is also the only federal agency that has never passed a comprehensive financial audit.

The Streamline Pentagon Spending Act (H.R.4740), introduced last summer, would repeal the mandate that allows these “wish lists.” It would be a first step towards holding the DoD accountable, enforcing transparency, and promoting investment in our communities, not war.

Today, we’re calling on Congress to put checks on wasteful Pentagon spending by passing the Streamline the Pentagon Budget Act, and investing in Americans instead. Thanks for taking action with us. [[link removed]]
