Texas Governor Greg Abbott has once again grossly used his political position to pander to Trump allies and supporters in lieu of justice and equality.

Abbott recently issued a pardon for Daniel Perry, who was convicted of killing Garrett Foster, an Air Force veteran, during a Black Lives Matter protest in Austin in the summer of 2020. Perry was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the shooting, which many witnesses testified was not in self-defense. Despite this, and Perry’s documented history of making racist remarks, Abbott chose to pardon him, pandering to radical right-wing figures and undermining the judicial process.

This is part of a deeply disturbing trend where Abbott acts inhumanely, unjustly, and as if he is above the law. Abbott has defied the U.S. Supreme Court's order to remove a deadly razor wire barrier he installed along the Texas border, which is responsible for deaths of migrants. He has also used asylum seekers as political pawns, sending them to various cities under inhumane conditions, and restricted voting access, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities.

Abbott’s actions are disgraceful, violent, and a danger to our democracy and freedom to protest. They must be condemned.
