BJA Medal of Valor Award - firefighters

Nominate Public Safety Officers Today

The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) administers the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor, honoring public safety officers in law enforcement, firefighting, and emergency services who demonstrate extraordinary acts of service to protect human life and ensure community safety.  

Learn about former award recipients and review frequently asked questions to help you prepare your nominations. Multiple public safety officers can be nominated for the same event, and individual officers can be nominated for multiple acts of service. 

You can also watch a video of the May 17, 2023, Medal of Valor awards ceremony. 

Submit your nominations for the 2023-2024 Medal of Valor—the Nation’s highest award for valor by a public safety officer. Nominations must be submitted or approved by the chief executive officer of the employing agencies and cover events that took place in June 1, 2023, through May 31, 2024. 

Nominations are being accepted until July 31, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. ET.

Enacted in 1976, the PSOB Program provides death, disability, and education benefits to those eligible for the program.
