A Deep Dive into Sextortion and the Exploitation of Transgender Youth

In an increasingly digital world, the challenges faced by children and teens are evolving as rapidly as the technology they use.

 

Recently, I encountered a heartrending example of just how intense and far-reaching these challenges can be.

 

A father* reached out to me, desperate for help to remove child sexual abuse material (CSAM) —the more apt term for “child pornography”—of his 15-year-old, Jay*, and explain the harms of self-producing such content.

Jay was also wrestling with the raw reality of rejection and bullying as a transgender teen. Yet, the turmoil Jay was experiencing offline proved to be just the tip of the iceberg.

The White House Calls on Tech Companies to Combat Image-Based Sexual Abuse

 

On May 23rd, The White House posted an urgent call to action regarding image-based sexual abuse (IBSA), including AI-generated and real images distributed without knowledge or consent. 

 

The White House called on industry leaders, including payment processors, cloud providers, search engines, and others to help prevent and remedy the harms of image-based sexual abuse.

 

"The explosion of AI is already fueling the child sexual abuse material crisis and disproportionately affects women and girls," said Dawn Hawkins, CEO, National Center on Sexual Exploitation. "The White House has rightly directed tech companies to stem the inevitable tidal wave of harm caused by AI-generated sexually explicit images. Tech companies must find and enact solutions immediately."
