On average, 123 people die from gun violence in Delaware every year – and an additional 305 are wounded. These statistics shake me to my core.

Gun violence is a public health crisis — and tackling this crisis means approaching it from all angles, including behavioral health resources, legislative efforts, and collaboration with community leaders.

Just last month, I was proud to support Governor Carney as he signed SB2, a key measure to curb gun violence in our communities.

This legislation requires folks to receive a permit and complete a safety training course before purchasing handguns. By conducting thorough background checks and other reviews, law enforcement will be able to deny permits to those who may pose a danger to public safety.

I’m proud to have earned the Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate distinction – which indicates that they have full faith that I will govern with gun safety as a top priority.

As a medical professional and Delaware’s next Governor, I will continue to work with families and communities who have been impacted by gun violence, gun safety advocates, frontline responders, and healthcare workers to build a safer state for all of us.

Delaware can and must continue to lead through common-sense gun safety laws. Our children and families deserve nothing less.
