Friends, most of the time in politics, they tell you NOT to share where you stand on the issues. The conventional wisdom goes like this: It's a bad move to give your opponents anything to hit you on. So try to avoid it, right? Dodge and weave and avoid taking a stand.
That’s not me. I believe you have to tell people where you stand and make the case. Maybe if you're no-show Nick LaLota you have to avoid the issues because you're on the wrong side of Suffolk County voters with most of them. OK, that one makes sense to me.
But let's be really clear: I hosted "Reality Check" for years. I've written about major issues like how we have to defend women's reproductive freedom, protect Medicare and Medicaid, and lower costs for middle class families. I’ve even emceed a Planned Parenthood event. All that is to say where I stand on the issues is crystal clear and always has been.
So when I have my team put up JohnAvlon.com/issues, there aren't any surprises there. You know where I stand. And I'm proud of it. [[link removed]]
Go click around to other candidates' so-called issues pages. They're full of empty platitudes if they exist at all. That's for cookie-cutter career politicians. When I say I'm running for Congress because Democrats have to win back this seat - it's because when I'm in Congress, Democrats are going to take meaningful action to combat climate change, take on price gougers, and defend abortion rights.
I'm proud of where I stand, because my values are Suffolk County values. I believe in helping veterans because that's what right. Same with expanding access to good public transportation, helping working families by restoring state and local tax deductions and expanding the child tax credit - and a whole host of other issues. The bottom line is pretty simple: What I'm running to represent in Congress are our community's values.
So why run from that?
Thanks for fighting the good fight with me.
-John
