Team, in the face of tragedy after the horrific mass shooting at the Tops Friendly Markets in Buffalo, NY, Governor Hochul took bold action to keep New Yorkers safe from gun violence.

As she told The 19th, “My hometown was the site of a mass shooting by a white supremacist who was radicalized online during the pandemic… on a beautiful, calm, sunny day — May 14, 2022, I’ll never forget it — he went into a grocery store and slaughtered 10 people not 10 minutes away from my home where I live.”

Governor Hochul turned this deep pain into purpose, calling on the state legislature to pass gun safety legislation, including strengthening red flag laws and increasing the age at which assault rifles can be purchased.

There’s more — in New York’s latest budget, nearly $350 million is dedicated to continuing New York’s efforts to reduce and prevent gun violence.

Gov. Hochul is deeply committed to keeping New Yorkers safe. Everyone in our state should be able to go to school, shop at a supermarket, and take the subway without the fear of gun violence — and Gov. Hochul is hard at work to make this a reality.
