Trump tells the MAGA faithful that immigrants are speaking "languages that we've never even heard of"
The convicted felon ratcheted up the fact-free fearmongering yesterday, telling a roomful of pep rally attendees in Arizona that immigrants are flooding the United States speaking "languages that we've never even heard of." With elementary philosophical aplomb, the MAGA cult leader accidentally put his own incredibly stupid twist on the old "if-a-tree-falls-in-a-forest" quandary for his faithful to (probably not) ponder: if a rich, centuries-old culture exists elsewhere in the world but a moron in Florida has never heard of it, is it even real?

VIDEO OF THE DAY: Top Trump accomplice ordered to report to prison
Trump whisperer, right-wing provocateur, and man of many shirts Steve Bannon was finally ordered to report to prison on July 1 to begin a four-month sentence for defying subpoenas from the House committee investigating the failed insurrection on January 6, 2021 after a higher court rejected his latest appeal. Bannon was originally sentenced in October 2022 but has dragged his case out with appeals and other staying tactics. Yesterday, Trump-appointed US District Judge Carl Nichols Tyler Cohen ruled that Bannon's time was officially up. Brian Tyler Cohen and Glenn Kirschner discuss the ramifications on the latest episode of The Legal Breakdown.

11 Trump fans hospitalized amid scorching heat at Arizona town hall
Soaring temperatures took a toll on some Arizonans who turned out to watch the MAGA cult leader air his many grievances at a town hall in Phoenix on Thursday, his first appearance in the key swing state since his criminal conviction in New York last week. The Phoenix Fire Department said 11 people were taken to the hospital to be treated for heat-related symptoms after lining up outside the event, where it was 110 degrees in the sun. During his speech, Trump did not mention any of his stricken supporters, but joked that many of the large crowd who had come to see him hadn't been able to get inside the venue. He's nothing if not consistent in his utter disdain for his followers.

Alex Jones moves to liquidate assets and relinquish ownership of Infowars to cover staggering defamation damages
Conspiracy theorist and sentient hemorrhoid Alex Jones has agreed to liquidate his assets to pay some of the staggering $1.5 billion he owes the Sandy Hook families he relentlessly defamed. Jones had long alleged that the 2012 mass shooting that killed 20 children and six adults at a Connecticut elementary school was a hoax carried by paid actors and that no one actually died. Jones resisted filing for bankruptcy for years to help pay some of the damages he inflicted, but has faced growing pressure from attorneys of the Sandy Hook families, who have yet to receive a penny from the deranged conspiracy theorist.

Mob of Israelis attack Palestinian journalist covering annual "Jerusalem Day" flag march, who was later arrested and beaten again by the police
Freelance Palestinian journalist Saif Al-Qawasmi was beaten by right-wing Israeli marchers while reporting on the annual nationalist flag march on June 5 in Jerusalem’s Old City. Local and foreign journalists were also assaulted and verbally abused, the International Federation of Journalists reported. Videos of Al-Qawasmi, wearing a vest labelled "PRESS" and being beaten by a group of far-right youth during the parade, circulated on social media. Al-Qawasmi, who is a Jerusalem resident, was reporting on the events for the local media platform Al-Asima News. Israeli progressive newspaper Haaretz reported that one of their journalists, Nir Hasson, was knocked to the ground and also beaten by right-wing youth. Far-right Israeli nationalists also assaulted a media crew with Australian Broadcasting Corporation. The Israeli police arrested five suspects participating in the parade. The so-called "Jerusalem Day" is a national holiday that marks the Israeli occupation of East Jerusalem following the Six Days war in 1967. Thousands of Israelis and Jews celebrate the date by parading the streets of Jerusalem’s Old City, from Damascus Gate in the Muslim quarter to the Western Wall. The parade has often sparked violent clashes between marchers and Palestinian residents, as well as anti-Arab hate speech and vandalism.

Washington Post CEO trashes NPR reporter over tabloid quid pro quo scoop
Will Lewis, the publisher and CEO of The Washington Post, on Thursday dragged NPR media correspondent David Folkenflik after the later alleged that Lewis tried to get him to drop a rather unflattering story about him. Folkenflik reported that Lewis "repeatedly — and heatedly" offered to give Folkenflik "an exclusive interview about the Post’s future" as long as Folkenflik ditched a story about claims that Lewis helped to cover up criminal practices at Rupert Murdoch’s tabloids in the UK. In a statement to the Post, Lewis trashed the 20-year NPR veteran as "an activist, not a journalist and accused Folkenflik of making "a story of a non-story."
NAACP urges Biden to reverse course on Israel before it’s too late
Joe Biden’s continued support of Israel’s brutal war on Gaza has crossed a line for the NAACP. The civil rights organization on Thursday released a statement urging the Biden administration to end weapons shipments to Israel and called for “an immediate and permanent ceasefire." "As the nation’s leading civil rights organization, it is our responsibility to speak out in the face of injustice and work to hold our elected officials accountable for the promises they’ve made," said NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson. "Over the past months, we have been forced to bear witness to unspeakable violence, affecting innocent civilians, which is unacceptable." The statement cites Israel’s offensive in Rafah, where hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians from across Gaza have been forced to flee, noting that over Memorial Day weekend, the Israeli military killed 45 Palestinians (with US-made weapons) and injured over 200 people, many of whom were young children. "It is one thing to call for a ceasefire, it is another to take the measures necessary to work towards liberation for all," Johnson added.
Kohl’s refuses to sponsor GOP nominating convention in Milwaukee
The Wisconsin department store chain Kohl’s will not sponsor any Republican National Convention events in Milwaukee this summer, a spokesperson confirmed to CNBC on Thursday. "Kohl’s is not a political organization nor donor and is not sponsoring nor engaging in any specific RNC events," the representative said. "We support the business community through the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce." The company, which has more than 1,100 stores across 49 states, has not funded either the Republican or Democratic conventions for over a decade, according to Federal Election Commission filings.
Rare and "unusual" cancers appear to be linked to COVID
Doctors across the US are reporting an alarming health trend in the wake of the pandemic. Since about 2021, they are noticing rare and unusual cancers in patients who shouldn't fit the bill — many of them young and without any family history of disease. Cancers that typically affect seniors in their 70s, and 80s are now striking people in their 40s, including bile duct and rare blood cancers. Viruses have been known to accelerate cancer since the 1960s, and researchers contend that a quarter of all cancers worldwide originated with HPV, Epstein-Barr virus, and hepatitis B. Researchers have focused on the effects of COVID itself as well as lingering symptoms even after recovering, a phenomenon known as long COVID. They have not, however, uncovered links between the COVID vaccines and cancer risk, though research into the long-term effects of vaccines is ongoing.
