John,

It’s been just one week since Trump was convicted of 34 felonies. Here’s what’s happened since:

* Fox News and Republicans are spreading conspiracy theories and smearing the justice system while violent threats are exploding on right-wing websites.
* Trump raised $53 million in the 24 hours following the verdict, crashing his fundraising website and giving him the biggest fundraising month in campaign history.
* The mainstream media is already moving on, with more coverage devoted to guessing how Trump’s conviction will impact his poll numbers than covering his crimes or the trial itself.

We’ll tell you what Jon Stewart said about the media on this week’s Daily Show in a moment, but if you’re ready to help COURIER provide rigorous, truthful journalism to communities who need it most, can you chip in $20 now? [[link removed]]

On Monday’s Daily Show, Jon Stewart took the media to task for their coverage of Trump’s trial.

This image pretty accurately sums up how he was feeling:

After showing a clip of Fox News journalists uncritically letting Trump deny saying "lock her up" about Hillary Clinton in 2016, Stewart went into a long rant about why our news media is so broken right now.

His core argument is that there aren't "two Americas" or "alternative facts," just the truth. The news media's role is to report out facts so the public can discern the truth, not to speculate and create a "horse race" for ratings and profits during elections—or, in the case of right-wing media like Fox News, ignore facts altogether to push propaganda just to get Trump elected.

Two things:

First , Jon Stewart is a national treasure and isn’t it awesome that he’s back! ❤️❤️❤️

Second , we couldn’t agree more with what he says about the purpose of the media. That’s why our ten battleground state newsrooms are on the ground in this critical election year providing factual, rigorous reporting about the issues that matter most in the communities we serve.

We don’t do “both sides” or useless horse race coverage just to drive clicks and make a buck, and, thanks to your grassroots support, we make all of our content freely available in the communities we serve.

Because we don’t charge a subscription fee or put our news behind a paywall, we rely on the generosity of supporters like you to continue and report out the truth during this critical year for our country. So, John, can you chip in $20 so we can ensure our newsrooms have everything they need to do their important work? [[link removed]]
