NIJC condemns Biden's anti-asylum executive order

This week, the Biden administration announced a new policy that effectively shuts down the border to thousands of people fleeing harm and seeking safety.

IN THE NEWS: "The policies announced today are near replicas of Trump-era asylum bans," said NIJC Director of Litigation Keren Zwick. "Only now, they come from an administration that vowed to protect the right to seek protection and support immigrant communities." Read our full statement here.

NIJC’s New York Times letter calls for POTUS to reassess handling of asylum

In a letter to editor published in The New York Times, NIJC Board Chair Chad R. Doobay and Executive Director Mary Meg McCarthy called on the government to recommit to restoring justice to the immigration system, improve pathways to legal protection, and divert billions of dollars currently being spent to incarcerate and turn away asylum seekers to instead invest in processes that uphold due process and the right to asylum.

The letter also highlights NIJC's 40-year history of providing legal services in a punitive immigration system and efforts to expand access to counsel through a strong network of 2,000 pro bono attorneys. Read more here.
