John,Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, the first Native person to serve as a secretary in the presidential cabinet, helped to establish the Advisory Committee on Reconciliation in Place Names.

The goal of the Committee is to remove racist slurs and offensive stereotypes from the names of waterways and geographical landmarks. The team has already worked to rename over 650 locations , but there’s still work to be done.

Offensive names for geographical landmarks only perpetuate discrimination and racism, and they deny the history of Indigenous people — the original caretakers of this land. The Advisory Committee has created and implemented an effective renaming process, but Native communities across the country would like to be more involved in the process. They’d also like to see a 90-day minimum Tribal consultation period as well as community listening sessions and education surrounding upcoming renamings.
