Did you see the horrific decision that came out of the Supreme Court recently? In Alexander v. South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP, the conservative-majority Court decided that South Carolina’s racially gerrymandered districts were constitutional. While this decision is atrocious, it is not at all surprising. For years now, the Court has been influenced by Leonard Leo and his shady network of dark money groups, including groups that filed the amicus briefs in this case.

We have emailed you countless times about the corruption that is plaguing the Supreme Court and our need for a stronger, more enforceable code of ethics for the Justices. The right to vote is one of our most fundamental rights and the conservative Supreme Court Justices, who are being influenced by prominent conservatives, decided against ensuring that Black South Carolinians have equal rights to elect the people they want representing them.

We need to pass the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency (SCERT) Act as soon as possible. This way we can prevent further corruption in our Supreme Court by improving the financial disclosure process, strengthening recusal standards, and creating an enforceable code of conduct for the Court, something that, clearly, it is in desperate need of. This assault on Black and minority voters will only worsen unless Congress takes action and passes the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.”
