Last Thursday, Donald Trump became the first former president to be convicted of a felony.
Trump, Fox News, and Republicans immediately smeared the justice system as corrupt and called for retribution.
Right-wing Trump supporters heard those calls.
According to a Reuters analysis of right-wing websites, calls for armed violence and riots surged online in the 24 hours after the verdict.
The Reuters analysis of the comment sections on these sites found countless examples of violent rhetoric, including calls to “hang everyone,” shoot Democrats, and “take care of” the judge and jury of Trump’s trial.
Disturbingly, NBC News also reported supporters were publishing the addresses of jurors, the judge, and others associated with the trial.
Of course, all of this is a direct response to Trump and the right-wing media’s lies and violent rhetoric.
Trump, Fox News, and MAGA Republicans have convinced their followers that Democrats have rigged the American justice system and elections to hurt Trump.
And for many who believe these lies and conspiracies they’re convinced that violence is the only way to make things right.
This is how January 6 happened, John.
