A MESSAGE FROM ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL AMY L. SOLOMON

Two weeks ago, I had the pleasure of providing opening remarks, alongside Liz Ryan, Administrator of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, at the 41st annual National Missing Children's Day Event. The ceremony honored the heroic and exemplary efforts of law enforcement professionals dedicated to protecting children.

This important event reminds us of the scope of the challenge that lies before us, the hundreds of thousands of reported missing children in the United States every year, and the depth of our collective commitment to protecting the safety and welfare of children. The dedicated organizations and individuals who do this vital work deserve our gratitude and deep appreciation.

In addition, the winner of the National Missing Children's Day poster contest [ [link removed] ] was named ― an outstanding 5th grade student from Chesnee, South Carolina. This year, OJJDP extended the event to feature a panel discussion addressing the critical issue of children missing or abducted from state social service agencies. Additionally, there was a special roundtable meeting with family survivors, during which families further engaged with the insights shared in the publication “When Your Child Is Missing: A Family Survival Guide [ [link removed] ].”

I'm also pleased to share details on the recently announced Children's Justice Project [ [link removed] ]. A coordinated effort with OJJDP, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and state and local law enforcement, this project will accelerate the identification of the estimated 1,000 cases across the country that involve unidentified children and youth who have been found deceased. It is our hope that resolving these cases will help bring some answers to families and communities.

OVC Underserved Communities [ [link removed] ]

Meeting the Basic Needs of Crime Victims in Underserved Communities*

The Office for Victims of Crimes (OVC) will award 25 local organizations up to $200,000 each [ [link removed] ] covering the basic needs of crime victims, such as transportation, temporary and transitional housing, clothing, food, and other items necessary for their well-being, healing, or safety. This funding opportunity will be the first time applicants will be able to prepare a project plan for submission in one of three ways, including a questionnaire, a video submission, or an oral presentation. The deadline to apply in Grants.gov is July 29, 2024, and in JustGrants on August 1, 2024.






NIJ Body Armor [ [link removed] ]

*Updated Standard: Ballistic Resistance of Body Armor*

NIJ has rolled out new guidelines and specifications [ [link removed] ] on body armor and their ballistic protection levels that changes the type of body armor that will be used and purchased in the future. The list of the NIJ Compliance Testing Program [ [link removed] ] has been updated with compliant ballistic-resistant body armor.




Medal of Valor 2024 [ [link removed] ]

*Now Accepting Nominations: **Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor*

The nomination period is now open for the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor [ [link removed] ]. Agency heads can nominate law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency services officers who have demonstrated extraordinary acts of courage and contributions beyond the call of duty.
