You might have heard the story of a ranger saving a child from a rushing river a few weeks ago. That wasn't just any ranger or any river - it was Superintendent Lonnie Porter and the Popo Agie river at Sinks Canyon. Lonnie is the superintendent at Seminoe State Park outside of Rawlins, but was shadowing Superintendent Jessica and me at Sinks, staying overnight in the campground. Lonnie was up getting ready to meet me for field trips when a knock on the door from a frantic father alerted him of a child in the river. Lonnie assessed the situation and went for rope, talking the father and child through the situation. Lonnie had just taken swift water rescue training and is a seasoned law enforcement officer. A series of right place, right time situations happened, in addition to Lonnie's training and experience, to allow Lonnie to safely rescue the child and prevent anyone else from attempting rescue. Oftentimes more than one tragedy can happen as other folks go into the dangerous conditions in an attempt to help. Lonnie might have saved more than one life that fateful Friday morning. After finishing up with the ambulance, alerting staff, etc. Lonnie came to Wyoming Outdoor Weekend to help teach kids about pollinators by making seed bombs with me! He was hoarse from all the instruction he yelled over the rushing water - but don't worry, I got him a latte and treat from one of Lander's great bakeries. Thanks Lonnie for keeping a cool head and working on this rescue - but he'd just tell you that's his job and that's why he does what he does.
