Last Thursday, a jury of everyday Americans affirmed that Donald Trump is not above the law. He was found GUILTY on all 34 charges for falsifying documents. He did this to cover up a conspiracy to deceive voters ahead of the 2016 election. This makes the leader of the Republican Party and the party's presidential candidate a felon.1
Now, Donald Trump needs to be held accountable for all of his alleged crimes. But the Supreme Court is standing in the way of the speedy trial that we deserve.
The Supreme Court has yet to release their decision on if Trump has "absolute immunity" from prosecution for any of the crimes he committed while president, including his role in attempting to overthrow the 2020 election. The right-wing-packed court is protecting Trump from further accountability by hearing this case in the first place.2 By stalling these trials, the court is preventing the American people from finding out the truth about Trump's attempt to dismantle our democracy.
Trump will exhaust every option to avoid accountability for the crimes he's committed. The Supreme Court should not play into Trump's tactics to postpone accountability and justice. Since they have decided to take Trump's appeal, they must rule against him quickly, denying Trump full, absolute immunity. They've already taken too long, increasing the risk that the Department of Justice trial might not occur until after the November election.
The Supreme Court has proven time and time again that they can rule with expediency, and we demand they do so now. Waiting any longer is a choice on their part to assist Trump's plan of evading all accountability ahead of the election. The truth is, the highest court in our country never should have accepted Trump's bogus immunity appeal, after a lower court denied him "absolute immunity." They must reject this undemocratic claim and do so immediately. There is no time to waste—our democracy depends on it. Join more than 100,000 MoveOn members and add your name to the petition now!
If a jury of everyday people who were facing intimidation and threats were brave enough to convict Trump of his heinous crimes, then the Supreme Court of the United States can rule against the former president—and make it clear that he doesn't get to escape his attempt to overthrow the election just because he was in office.
Trump’s recent conviction of falsifying business records in order to influence the 2016 election is just one of his many attempts at lying to the American people in order to gain power. Enough is enough.
The Supreme Court must not play into his baseless legal arguments and let Trump get away with hiding the truth from voters again. They must rule on the side of the American people and our democracy.
