Since it was passed in 1965, the Voting Rights (VRA) has blocked the implementation of tons of discriminatory voting laws, serving as protection of the voices of millions of voters.
But in 2013, the Supreme Court's decision in its infamous Shelby County v. Holder case destroyed the VRA, and hundreds of extreme voter suppression bills were proposed nationwide. This lead to extreme gerrymandering, fraudulent voter roll purges, and polling location closures — often strategically implemented to silence minority communities.
Voting rights are under attack nationwide as we speak. In 2023, 14 states passed restrictive voting laws that were championed by Republicans.
Congress must do everything it can urgently to protect our freedom to vote. Join us and sign the petition now to demand that the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act be passed immediately.
The Freedom to Vote Act (FTVA) and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (VRAA) would restore and update the protections of the original VRA. Together, the bills would also regulate ballot box access and placement, neutralize partisan and racial gerrymandering, safeguard elections from foreign interference, and regulate transparency surrounding campaign finances. It’s clear these bills are a net good for our country, but they’ve already been blocked by Republican extremists in Congress.
At Democratic Values, we firmly believe that all Americans deserve equal opportunity when it comes to voting, and that the ability to participate in our democracy is a fundamental right.
We demand that Congress uphold and expand this freedom by passing the FTVA and the VRAA as soon as possible, to ensure that every American’s voice counts and is protected against partisan attempts at voter suppression.
Sign the petition to Congress: Restore the Voting Rights Act and our freedom to vote by passing the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
Thanks for fighting for voter equality alongside us.
