Taft High track and field ribbon-cutting

Dear friends and partners,

The end of the school year is in sight, and we have been busy celebrating our students, staff, school communities. We recently cut the ribbon on a state-of-the-art new track and field at Taft High ([link removed]) , which is part of the campus’s $230 million modernization. Our partners at Lulu’s Place also broke ground on a new youth center ([link removed]) to offer academic, athletic, and wellness programs for students in the Westchester community—along with a $5 million donation to renovate the baseball and softball field at the Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnet campus.

As we continue to invest in the future of our school communities, the Board met this week to discuss the District’s long-term financial health and impacts of California’s looming budget deficit in our classrooms. As these important conversations continue, the Board will soon take up another impactful proposal—my resolution to create cell phone-free school days ([link removed]) to address the academic and mental health challenges associated with smartphones and social media in schools.

The school year is almost over, but our work continues to ensure that every student has the ability to learn and thrive in LAUSD.

In the Spotlight: Taft Grad Aims for the Gold in the Summer Olympics!
Trenton Cowles (Taft High '20) has had a love for archery since fifth grade, and this year, his dream of joining the USA Olympic team is coming true. Trenton is already a decorated archer, taking home a gold and bronze metal in the 2018 Youth Olympics in Brazil, and at 16 years old, he was ranked second in the nation for his age group. He always managed to balance his schoolwork with his busy archery schedule, and before he heads to Paris for the Olympics, he will be graduating from Texas A&M University. As part of the Texas A&M Archery team, Trenton says his teammates are the ones who push him to be his best, which is what it's going to take to win gold. We can't wait to cheer him on at the Olympic range this summer!
