Friend,
In the month of May, we take time to reflect and celebrate the Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders who have contributed to America's history and are instrumental in its future success.
I think back on my childhood growing up the daughter of Chinese immigrants. My parents worked so hard to support me and five siblings. They didn’t speak English so at age eight, I started managing the books at the family dry cleaning business.
At the end of each week, my father would hand me our sales receipts in a cigar box, It was my job to figure out how much money we had and owed.
The box sometimes included tax forms from the Board of Equalization. Little did I know that decades later, I’d become a member of that elected tax board – hearing tax appeals and applying our tax code equitably.
As I reflect on all the ways the AANHPI community has enriched our nation, I always think first about my parents – the day in and day out love they showed and the values they instilled in their children. Sometimes it’s the small things done consistently that have the biggest impact.
Growing up managing my parents' books, I realize now that I counted on fairness, reliability, and integrity from our government in order for our family business to thrive.
These are the values I’ll keep as your Governor, but I’ll need your help to get there. Can you chip in $3 to help us improve lives for working families in California?
