Their proposed platform calls abortion “homicide” and declares personhood for the fetus from the moment of fertilization. This wouldn’t just outlaw abortion, it would prevent the use of IVF, and could even impact contraception! This is what we were worried about when Roe v. Wade was overturned. If we are going to fight off these state-level restrictions, we need federal abortion protections – and we need them now. That’s why I have introduced the Women’s Health Protection Act in every Congress since 2013. Unless we have federal protections on abortion care, anti-choice advocates and lawmakers will continue to propose legislation as horrifying as this new policy.
