Working class voters think Tories failing on economy, NHS and pensions

Working class voters believe the government is failing to give families a decent standard of living, a poll has found.

The survey showed people think ministers are doing a bad job at running public services including the NHS, setting taxes and looking after pensioners. A YouGov poll, commissioned by the Progressive Policy Institute, revealed deep concerns about the running of the country.

Three-quarters (74%) of working class voters said the government is doing a bad job of managing the economy so that ordinary people get a decent standard of living. Just 18% disagreed. Some 71% said the provision of public services such as health and education was going badly, compared to 21% who said it was going well.

Could US and UK voters spark a global center-left revival?

In this year of high-stakes elections, none are likely to tell us more about the health of liberal democracy than the marquee contests in the United Kingdom and the United States.

All signs point to a crushing defeat for British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his Conservative Party after 14 tumultuous years in power. Poised for victory is a renovated Labour Party, ably led by Keir Starmer and leading the Tories in polls by more than 20 points.

On Wednesday, Sunak surprised the country by announcing a snap election on July 4 rather than waiting until the end of the year. A Labour victory would cap a remarkable turnaround for a party that suffered a devastating rout in 2019.

NEW PPI REPORT

A new PPI report suggests requiring federal agencies to explain the rationale for every newly initiated rulemaking activity and make this information available to Congress and the public through a regulatory early notice.

This early notice proposal builds on PPI’s previous work on regulatory accumulation and reform. In 2013, PPI called for the creation of a Regulatory Improvement Commission that would compile a list of existing regulations that have outlived their usefulness and recommend their modification or rescission. Now, as Congress is considering new reforms for regulatory oversight and transparency, PPI is again proposing a bipartisan solution to streamline and improve the rulemaking process.

Erin Delaney
Director of Health Care Policy
Erin Delaney is the Director of Health Care Policy at the Progressive Policy Institute. In this role, Erin focuses on analyzing and developing policy solutions that address high health care costs, coverage gaps, and that promote medical innovation and more efficient use of health care resources to improve health outcomes and to ensure all Americans have access to affordable health care.

Prior to joining PPI, Erin served as the Health Care Program Manager at Center Forward, where she promoted Center Forward’s health care advocacy and policy objectives. Her role there centered on building relationships and encouraging educational opportunities with Members of Congress and congressional staff, state-based policymakers, and other health care policy stakeholders. She also focused on legislative and third-party research and analysis.

Erin holds a Bachelor of Science in political science from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
