Texas GOP eyes death penalty for abortions
The Republican Party of Texas is currently advancing a platform that, among other jawdropping policy positions, appears to endorse the death penalty for abortion providers and patients. The terrifying new platform proposal, which delegates voted on over the weekend, calls for new legislation to solidify fetal personhood ideology into law, define abortion care as homicide, and criminalize in vitro fertilization. The 50-page, radical right-wing wishlist also includes a slew of other extreme ideas such as proclaiming that gender-affirming care is “child abuse,” requirements that Christianity and the Bible be taught in public schools, and clarifies that Texas “retains the right to secede from the United States.” Without hyperbole, the modern GOP is an existential, extremist threat to American democracy and fundamental human rights.

Two USAID officials have resigned over the Biden team's handling of Israel's murderous Gaza war, saying that the Biden administration is not telling the truth about Israeli obstruction of humanitarian assistance to more than two million Palestinians trapped and starving in the tiny coastal strip. Alexander Smith said he was given a choice between resignation and dismissal after preparing a presentation on maternal and child mortality among Palestinians, which was cancelled at the last minute by USAID leadership last week. “I cannot do my job in an environment in which specific people cannot be acknowledged as fully human, or where gender and human rights principles apply to some, but not to others, depending on their race,” wrote Smith in his resignation letter.

New Louisiana law will criminalize approaching police under certain circumstances
Critics of a new Louisiana law passed by Republicans, which makes it a crime to approach within 25 feet of a police officer under certain circumstances, fear that the measure could hinder the public’s ability to film officers — a tool that has increasingly been used to finally hold police accountable. Under the law, anyone who is convicted of “knowingly or intentionally” approaching an officer, who is “lawfully engaged in the execution of his official duties,” and after being ordered to “stop approaching or retreat” faces up to a $500 fine, up to 60 days in jail, or both. There is simply no reason for such a law to exist, other than to protect cops engaging in misconduct by stifling the public's ability to document law enforcement encounters with civilians.

She also broke ranks from her party to support a GOP bill aimed at removing sexually explicit books from school libraries, a designation critics feared would be used to target LGBTQ+ literature. Simmons declared victory with a double-digit lead over Thierry in Tuesday's runoff election.
