This is not fake news: Trump campaign sues a TV station. "The Trump campaign on Monday filed a lawsuit against a Wisconsin TV station, saying it aired a pro-Biden advertisement containing the intentionally false claim that the president referred to the coronavirus as a 'hoax.'" [Read the full story from the Washington Times.] As we've shared, some left-leaning groups are running ads against President Trump that criticize his response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. We think it's shameful to try to use a national crisis to score cheap political points.
And now the story may be even worse, as the Trump campaign has alleged that one such ad is based on a false claim -- and the campaign has sued the TV station that aired it.
As the Washington Times reported: "The lawsuit says the ad used digitally manipulated clips of Mr. Trump’s voice to fabricate him saying, 'The coronavirus, this is their new hoax.'"
The campaign contends that the President has never called the virus a "hoax." We'd add that the decisive actions he's taken -- for weeks! -- also shows the seriousness with which he's responded to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This isn't good news for Joe. President Trump and Joe Biden are tied in the polls. "Biden’s lead has disappeared, Fox News reports Monday, and the pair are now tied in the outlet’s 2020 presidential tracking poll." [Read the full story from the Daily Wire.] Joe Biden had a lead over President Trump in early polls for the 2020 election. But that lead has "disappeared" as the two are now tied in a recent poll.
Of course, this is a highly unusual presidential election, as the news is (rightly!) focused on the country's response to COVID-19 and Americans are more interested in what unites us, rather than what divides us. Plus, Biden has not been able to host any major events or campaign speeches due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Time will tell what this means for the 2020 election, though it certainly won't be "politics as usual" this year.
VP speculation starts. Could it be Amy Klobuchar? "According to the exclusive report, a Biden campaign insider recently told the news agency that Klobuchar 'could be No. 1' on the former VP’s shortlist. Another party insider, a person who works in the Senate, told the news agency that Klobuchar was the stand-out candidate for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee." [Read the full story from the Daily Wire.] Joe Biden pledged that his running mate for Vice President would be a woman, but he's yet to name her.
Now one theory, supposedly sourced from a "campaign insider," says it could be Amy Klobuchar. She dropped out before Super Tuesday and quickly endorsed Biden, and she had a stand-out debate performance during her run.
Oftentimes a politician's supporters will use VP rumors as a way to bolster that politician's national standing and name recognition. But Klobuchar seems like a very realistic pick -- though only time will tell, as the only certain prediction in the 2020 election is that everything is uncertain!
And in unsurprising news, Joe Biden is still the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination. "Former Vice President Joe Biden won Alaska's primary after votes were tallied in a contest conducted entirely by mail because of the coronavirus." [Read the full story from The Hill.] Joe Biden officially won the Democratic primary in Alaska, which added nine delegates to his tally. Bernie Sanders, who finished second, added eight.
Though Joe Biden is the presumed Democratic nominee in 2020, he's at 1,228 delegates, which is still shy of the 1,991 required to win at the Democratic National Convention on the first ballot.
No challenges at the convention are expected (especially because the Democratic super-delegates who join on the second ballot are presumed to be very pro-Biden), but those stories may linger until he crosses the 1,991 delegate threshold.
And, on a final note: as always, we wish for the health and safety of you, your family, and your community at this uncertain time. Stay safe and we'll see you on Wednesday!
