Bad actors are weaponizing Facebook Groups to spread anti-Jewish hate. Here’s what we found.
Friend,
Bad actors are quietly weaponizing Facebook Groups to spread anti-Jewish hate by camouflaging themselves as pro-Palestine supporters, while Meta (once again) neglects its responsibility to keep its platform safe.
We identified nefarious antisemitic posts in 10 Groups discussing the Palestinian cause with over 300K members - where mostly well-meaning people express their solidarity with Palestine. A week after we reported anti-Jewish hate, these Groups’ admins failed to remove or hide 76% of the posts.
Our new research also shows that:
Some of the admins themselves have promoted hateful content, including justifying the Holocaust based on a “Jewish history of avariciousness” and spreading conspiracies about a “Jew World Order.”
Our accounts were banned in 8 out of 10 Facebook Groups after reporting anti-Jewish hate.
Most of the Groups that banned us have one admin in common: an account that has promoted conspiracies about the US government being controlled by a “Zionist international mafia" and lies about COVID.
Facebook is profiting from ads placed next to anti-Jewish hate in the Groups we studied, including ads by The Salvation Army and Charity Meals.
What's worse, when we reported anti-Jewish hate directly to Facebook, the platform failed to act in 99% of cases after a week - which shows that Meta is leaving its responsibility to moderate content to Group admins who often spread hate themselves.

While Meta must implement strong and clear vetting standards for admins of large Facebook Groups, lawmakers must demand more transparency from social media platforms about their moderation practices to ensure it’s not left to those spreading hate.
The amplification of hate on social media can lead to serious real-life consequences, especially in times of crisis. Help raise awareness about Meta’s failure to keep users safe on Facebook - share this.
