Legislative Update
The 2024 legislative session has finished just in time for summer, however, Democrats ended session by passing a hyper-partisan 1,430-page omnibus bill only minutes before the midnight deadline. This mega bill, which was originally the Tax Omnibus bill, added at least 8 unrelated bills and other provisions we don't know about. This is not an omnibus bill at all, this is an extortion bill. The majority had two years to pass their bills in a correct and fair way, and their failure to do so will now affect every Minnesotan.
*MEGA BILL*
Nash Floor Debate
On the final night of session, Democrats threw rule and order out the window to pass a 1,430-page mega bill that included everything they mismanaged their time on. What was originally the Tax Omnibus bill for this session turned into a chaotic monstrosity only 90 minutes before session ended. Democrats used the procedural process to stop debate and force members to vote on this unvetted bill which included the following:
* HF 5242 [ [link removed] ] – Transportation Bill
* HF 4247 [ [link removed] ] – Scope of Practice and Licensing Bill
* HF 4024 [ [link removed] ] – Higher Education Policy Bill
* HF 2609 [ [link removed] ] – Binary Trigger Ban/Straw Purchaser Penalty Increase
* SF 4942 [ [link removed] ] – The entirety of the Agriculture, Commerce, Energy, Utilities, Environment, and Climate bill we were previously debating
* SF 5335 [ [link removed] ] – Human Services Omnibus Bill
* SF 4699 [ [link removed] ] – Health and Human Services Supplemental Appropriations Bill
* HF 5363 [ [link removed] ] – Minnesota Paid Leave Law
The DFL put the House floor in disarray and abused the legislative power to pass their own agendas instead of doing what is best for the state of Minnesota. This is not what Minnesotans have elected us to come do, and this end of session was yet another way the Democrats have shown how they have broken Minnesotan's trust. By passing this bill in such a deceitful way, they robbed greater Minnesota of being properly represented.
The Democrats have proven time and time again that they are not here for the interests of Minnesotans, they have no respect for the state legislature rules and process, and continue to be hypocritical in the way they hold power at the Capitol. For example, in 2018 when facing a similar situation, Melissa Hortman said, “Nobody looking at this legislative session, Democrat or Republican, should ever do anything like that ever again. We certainly would not.” Fast forward six years, as House Speaker, she has done exactly that but doubled in size.
*New Child Protection Laws*
Nash Passes Child Laws
In spite of all the chaos and the bad legislation that took place in the final hours of the 2024 session, I'm proud to say that the bills I've been working on for new child protection laws were passed.
This session I presented a bill in the Public Safety Finance and Policy Committee that would provide more stringent criteria to be met to place level 3 sex offenders in neighborhoods after their release from prison. This is something I worked on for the last two years, since an incident in Victoria where a Level 3 sex offender was placed in a neighborhood that was home to 728 children. I have worked tirelessly on this bill to make sure there is no possibility of another incident like this happening again, and now this new law will make sure that our neighborhoods are safe for the children who live there.
Furthermore, I accomplished getting an amendment passed that implements a criminal penalty if child maltreatment is not reported. Everyday hundreds of thousands of children rely on the help of those who have the ability to stop the abuse these kids are facing. There is nothing more heartbreaking or wrong than when mandated reporters ignore the problem and allow abuse to continue. I will always fight for the protection of children, and getting this amendment adopted was just one of the ways I did that this year.
