John,
Memorial Day was originally deemed “Decoration Day” and intended to recognize soldiers lost during the Civil War. Over time, the day expanded to memorialize all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.
Today is not a "happy" day for many families and loved ones in North Carolina and across our nation.
North Carolina proudly boasts one of the largest military footprints of any state in the country. I grew up near Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, NC - the largest Marine Corps base on the East Coast and the world's largest concentration of Marines and Sailors.
I still remember admirably watching the camouflaged tanks and trucks pass by full of brave men and women - especially when they would greet my childhood excitement with waves or repeatedly blowing the horn.
North Carolina is also home to Fort Liberty, the home of the famed 82nd Airborne Division, and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, home of the 4th Fighter Wing - collectively representing three of the five branches of service.
North Carolina is arguably the most military and veteran friendly state in the United States - but there's room for improvement. As State Auditor, I am making it a priority to ensure resources intended to benefit our service members and veterans gets to them and their families.
I wish you a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day as we all pause to remember, mourn and celebrate those who have given their lives for our freedoms.
Yours truly,
